Lately I’m noticing some of my favorite coastal design images coming from the very same source: Joni Vanderslice and her acclaimed J Banks. So it’s no surprise, Southern Coastal Living (Gibbs Smith 2016), is currently a bit of an obsession and has a special place among my stacks of coffee table books and seaside-inspired magazines.
Her blend of casual, easy elegance and everyday comfort makes her spaces charming. And irresistible.
And so inviting……….
With each turn of the page you sense her love of the water and great design. Add to that a touch of southern hospitality and you can understand why her signature vibe feels so warm and welcoming.
If coastal flavor is your thing (as it is mine), you’ll appreciate how Vanderslice uses color and texture to blur the lines between indoors and out—drawing the feel of the water into each and every space of the home. Whether a patio, living area or luscious bath, subtle reminders of of the shore are ever present.
I especially love the sections on guest rooms, master suites and dressing the bed. It’s here where simple details make all the difference. This particular bedroom is a personal favorite. Everything from the brass fixture to the comfy, crisp bed linens (perfectly prepared for a long afternoon nap) to the fine-casual decor says welcome, cozy-up! It’s stylish living that’s timeless. And translates just as well here along the shores of Lake Michigan as it does in the South Carolina lowcountry!
Here’s a great use of space for mini guests…….or big guests who love a bit of fun and atmosphere. Note how the storage works double duty and complements the seaside flavor.
As you would expect, there are also kitchens to die for. Here Vanderslice creates the ideal spot for family and friends to stop and linger. The elegant curve of the window, the mix of soft creamy whites and gentle grays, traditionally styled light fixtures over marble counter tops …all the perfect combination of color, texture and elements that illustrate her “luxury without pretense” design philosophy.
Southern Coastal Living’s the perfect addition to any design library—especially for those who love the coast and the look and feel of the coastal lifestyle. And I’ll absolutely look forward to whatever Joni Vanderslice and her talented J Banks create going forward!
